Use this page when you want to continue an existing How to Fish save on another Steam device. If the save will not load on the original computer, use the loading and save troubleshooting guide first. Syncing a broken save does not establish that it has been repaired.

What changed in Patch 1.0.12

Dazed Games announced Steam Cloud support on September 4, 2026. For saves already on a computer, the developer specifies a first upload step: play How to Fish on that computer and exit the game once. Installing the update on a different computer alone does not perform that step on the original machine. Read the official announcement.

This is the announced procedure, not a migration we have personally tested. September 5 players still reported missing progress when moving from a main PC to a laptop or from Steam Deck to PC. Those reports show why checking the result matters; they do not identify one proven cause.

Upload the save from its original computer

  1. Identify the computer that still contains the progress you want. Keep that device and any existing backups intact until the destination is checked. Do not uninstall or replace the source save to troubleshoot the destination.
  2. Restart Steam and install the available How to Fish update. The Cloud announcement is Patch 1.0.12; an older build predates this feature.
  3. In Steam, check Settings → Cloud. For the game, check Library → How to Fish → Properties → General for a Cloud setting. Enable synchronization where the option is available. If the game-specific option is missing, use the missing-option section below.
  4. Run How to Fish on the source computer, confirm it is the save you intended to keep, and exit normally, following the developer's first-upload instruction. If Steam presents a conflict before launch, stop and resolve that decision first.
  5. Leave Steam online to finish syncing. Do not immediately close Steam or switch devices while a sync is pending or an error remains.

Steam's Cloud support guide explains the settings and synchronization warnings. Enabling a setting is only preparation; it is not proof that the wanted save reached the cloud.

Check the destination before continuing

On the destination, use the same Steam account and an updated copy of How to Fish. Valve's Cloud overview describes upload after exit and download before launch. Allow that synchronization to finish, then open the expected save and compare it with your source progress: for example, the island reached and the equipment or currency you remember.

If that comparison is correct, the wanted progress is available on that device. A Cloud icon alone is not this check. If the save is missing or older, stop before starting a replacement run or making more progress there. Return to the source computer and check its upload status first.

If the Cloud option is missing

On September 7, the public Steam store feature list reviewed for this guide did not display Steam Cloud, despite the September 4 announcement. A missing storefront label does not tell us whether your save was uploaded.

Restart Steam and check the updated game's properties. If no Cloud control or sync status is available, preserve the original progress and ask Dazed Games through the official Discord. Report the game version, source and destination devices, and the missing control. Do not treat a community suggestion to change hidden configuration flags as an official activation procedure.

If Steam reports a conflict or cannot sync

Resolve a sync error before launching on the destination. For a conflict, compare the displayed local and cloud timestamps with where and when you actually played. Choose the copy corresponding to the progress you want to retain, following Steam's explanation. The newest timestamp alone is not enough if you just created an unwanted replacement save.

If you cannot identify the correct copy, cancel rather than guess. Keep any existing backups and the original device available. Steam Support explains the system but cannot recover lost saves or choose a conflict result for you.

Cloud saves and corruption backups are different

Patch 1.0.11 announced save checks and backups for corruption. Patch 1.0.12 announced Cloud support afterward. The backup announcement does not document filenames, retention, or a player-operated restore process, so this page does not invent those steps.

Cloud synchronization is also separate from crossplay and online co-op. Moving your progress between your own Steam devices does not establish PC-to-console multiplayer, transfer ownership of a friend's hosted world, or guarantee recovery of a deleted save.
